The first sail of the new year was blessed with sun and wind. Dick returned to sailing after his arm problems. After some kind of launch malfunction he was first in the water and set sail for the outer harbor. By the time everyone else was in Dick was no longer to be seen. Matt and Johnnie even sailed their El Toros around the inner jetty to look. No sign.

Robert’s Pelican followed the El Toros around the course. We started in the opposite direction from our usual. Supposed to be up wind but it was more broad reach. We also changed one of our three usual marks from the rock to an anchored boat.

After the second race started dick came in from the outer harbor and, though quite late, joined in.
The third race the El Toros crossed the line follow by Dick’s Pelican with Robert bringing up the rear. That was basically the finish order. Dick must have missed the change of the “up wind” mark as he ignored the anchored boat. When Matt asked the race committee if they had noticed the “senior short cut” Paul replied, “ I don’t do protests. I just wave the flags.”
It was great to be out sailing. Thanks to Paul, Jim and Tommy for timing, horn blowing, and flag waving. And thanks for the great weather.
Editors Note:
Racer Dick and Race Committee Paul and Jimmy were left out of the decision to change the “up wind“ mark. We just ASSUMED Robert, Johnnie and Matt just went around the anchored boat, the committee didn’t disqualify them as they only chose to add distance to their race and didn’t violate the mark.
Photos from the potluck that followed the race. Lots of good food and company.
